Loop's availability is having a bit of a hiccup. Or growing pains. Prior to 2022, they were an online store that sold various brand-name products in special reusable containers. These were sent to customers in large, reusable totes that could be returned later with the empty containers.

They're now transitioning to selling these products in brick-and-mortar stores, most notably Kroger and Walgreens in a few locations, with dropoff bins at those locations where consumers can return the empty containers. They also have some deals with specific fast-food brands to package their food in returnable containers, in a few locations.

If you're interested in using their service, try getting their app (search for "Loop Deposit" in your app store). The app includes a map that shows nearby purchase and return locations. Presumably, giving them your zip code during the signup process also serves as a data point for them to know where they should expand to.

The Below Mostly Relates To Their Old System

I liked the things they sold, especially the Love Home and Planet laundry detergent that came in a lovely metal bottle. Unfortunately sometimes demand outpaced their supply; it was common for items to be out of stock.

The biggest mark against their online model was the set of hefty overhead charges associated with it. Shipping to California was a flat but massive $30 per tote. This doesn't seem quite as bad when you consider that you were really paying for the return trip at the same time, but still, that's a lot. Also, each reusable container, including each tote, had a deposit fee associated with it. Of course, you'd get this returned as store credit after returning empty containers, but you needed to get a few shipments in before the discount started showing up.

There is a Walgreens near me, but I have yet to see Loop-packaged products appear there. It'll be nice to get things from them without having to strategize putting them in the largest, least-frequent shipments possible.
