The big event of this last weekend was the Maker Faire, but I went to that just on Sunday. On Saturday I went to the Fremont Burger and Brew Fest and...frankly, it was a little strange.
Though they'd commissioned live music, it was really a very small event, with only a few booths/trucks in each of the two main categories and a handful of other local groups or artisans (pretty much all of whom I recognized from the larger art fest that happens later in the year). But the strangest part of it all was that they held this event not in any highly-populated area--not even the nice street they added across from the Hub, where they put the food trucks on Fridays, but deeper into the section of town that they hope to someday turn into Downtown Fremont.
I guess the goal was to not block traffic for such a tiny event? Or perhaps to get us used to the fact that hey, these streets exist? And someday there will be interesting things there? But for now, the area's pretty desolate, and mostly characterized by the nearby construction and some abandoned buildings.
I like the idea of giving Fremont a real downtown; it's something I miss about Livermore. But putting an event out there when it's barely even a work in progress yet is just...bizarre.
The burgers were good, at least.
